Vex'ahlia
Vex’ahlia — “The Huntress-Baroness”

“I came out of the woods because the woods aren’t enough anymore. There is too much world.” — Vex’ahlia, recovered fragment, 809 P.D.
Public Memory
Half-elf ranger. The avarice and ambition of Vox Machina, openly. Self-styled Baroness of the Bramblewood once she and her brother Vax’ildan attached themselves to Percival’s Whitestone reclamation. Hunted in the king’s preserves, levied private tolls on the trade roads, ran a private army of foresters and trappers.
She was killed in 813 P.D. during the Wyrm-Hunt, a campaign she launched against the Chroma Council’s young dragons. The dragons turned the hunt back on her. Brimscythe, blue dragon of the Council, ended her at the headwaters of the Stormcrest. Her bow, Fenthras, was buried with her bones in a cairn the Council still tends.
Whispered Truth
Vex’ahlia is the most morally legible of Vox Machina, which is a strange thing to say. Her motives were transparent: she had been poor, she had been hungry, and she did not intend to be either again. Her cruelty was practical — she didn’t enjoy it. She also, alone among the seven, expressed regret in writing. A short letter recovered from her cairn (not yet released to the public) reads, in part:
“I have killed too many things that did not deserve it. I will not write down which. I would do it again, but I will not pretend I was right.”
The Saviors who recovered the letter — primarily Lady Delilah Briarwood — agreed not to publish it. The reasoning: cleanly-villainous Vox Machina is what the world needs to remember. A complicated Vex’ahlia helps no one. Delilah keeps the original in her writing-desk in Whitestone Castle.
Stats & Build — if she returns
- Tier 3 (level 13).
- Class: Ranger (Gloom Stalker or Hunter) 8 / Rogue (Assassin) 5.
- Signature gear: Fenthras (longbow +3, vine-entangle on hit, currently in her cairn), Whisper (Vax’ildan’s dagger, paired with Fenthras in legend, see his file), Trinket the bear (alive — wandered out of the Bramblewood after her death and now lives wild in the Frostweald; sometimes appears to PCs).
- Suggested CR: 13.
- Returned variant (most plausible: post-second-life ghost-revenant trying to prevent a return of Vox Machina): use the Revenant template but with Lawful Good alignment. She is the rarest case in the campaign — a Fallen who, if encountered, may be an ally.
Roleplay Hooks
- Voice: warm, mocking, observant. Slips into ranger-Common slang. Calls people “darling” insincerely and “love” sincerely.
- Soft spots: Trinket. Her brother. The son she abandoned. Forests on fire (this paralyzes her).
- Hard spots: gold. Always gold. Never trust a transactional gesture from her in flashback — it is always layered.
Return Conditions
The most interesting “return” of Vex’ahlia is as a ghost-ally in Tier 3, asking the party to do the thing she failed to do: stop a final play by what remains of Vox Machina, or by someone using their legacy. This is the campaign’s clearest opportunity to invert player expectations of “kill the villain” into “help the villain finish her atonement.”
If the DM prefers a hostile return: a cult — possibly Scanlan-aligned — recovers Fenthras, exhumes her bones, and forces a partial resurrection that is not the woman who wrote the letter. That Vex’ahlia is a CR 14 ranger with Whisper-style teleport rebound built into her bow.
